Solving a Customer Problem
"At times, a customer's code is misbehaving, but the source code is not readily available. Even in such cases, it may be still be possible to diagnose the customer's problem using powerful tools in the Solaris Operating System. These tools are available with a recent copy of Sun's compilers, such as Sun Studio 9 software. The collect and er_print tools are most often used to identify performance bottlenecks, but they are also very handy for general debugging tasks. In addition, the Solaris dynamic loader allows an analyst to easily develop interpose library routines that reveal valuable information without the burden of rebuilding large customer or system libraries.
This article describes how the collect, er_print, and interpose libraries were utilized to resolve a customer problem."
