GNU: The New World Order
"We now live in a world that is dominated by personal computers, that are descendant from IBM's original Personal Computer (I will simply refer to these as PCs from now on). These computers are compatible enough to all run the same software in binary form. This is a very important factor in the current business model. These PCs can all run the same operating system, and most of them in fact do. Microsoft Windows is that operating system. Currently, the marketshare of Windows is estimated to be about 95% of all IBM compatible PCs. This means that software developers can pretty much ignore all other hardware and software, and develop for Windows PCs only. And this is what they do. Developing for one system only is much cheaper and faster than developing for multiple systems."
