Ace's Hardware has a new article discussing mainframes, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Mainframe, authored by a longtime reader who has had extensive hands-on experience working with these systems over the years. The article serves as a general overview of mainframes and the technology behind them, covering the basics, including the various families and some of the terminology such as I/O channels, logical partitions, and so forth. As mainframes are well known for their reliability features, these are covered as well. As mainframes are well known for their reliability features, the article also takes a look at how such fully redundant architectures are designed and operate.
