Design and Implementation of centralized logging

Len Rose has written: Basic Design of a Managed Service Provider Logging and Monitoring System

"In order for a managed services practice to succeed in it's goal of managing hosts and routers/firewalls the service provider has to be able to know at any given time the state of the hosts and network devices it's been entrusted to care for. In order to achieve this goal, the best practice thus far has been to place a collection server on the customer's network, usually behind the site router, and firewalls at a strategic place on the network where it can collect localized syslog traffic."
